Live Model Steam Trains
A hobby that has become very popular recently and enjoyed by many people is collecting Model Steam Trains. It can be a very fun hobby that is relaxing and you can really show your creative side. The age group of collectors ranges from young children up to adults. Collectors can spend many hours creating different layouts, adding scenery and searching for that special train to make the set complete.
Because there have been so may collectors, they have created train societies filled with passionate model steam engine collectors. In 1910, the first society was set up in London, UK. This society boasts having over 5,000 books on model trains and many hundred model trains. There are also clubs, stores and magazines devoted to this fun and creative hobby.
As you know, there can be many different layouts for steam engine models. The very basic and oh so boring oval is probably only used by novices. The more experienced collector will have a more realistic layout with landscapes and a lot of scenery. The experienced modeler spends hours upon hours setting up and creating different landscapes and themes for their layout. They include replicas of cities or countrysides and have realistic looking scenery and accessories to accompany their construction.
This hobby can be very expensive and collectors spend a lot of money getting all their accessories and scenery supplies set up, including their model steam trains.
Although most people don’t know much about their beginnings, today’s collectors and enthusiasts are very familiar with the significance of its heritage. Because it was the first form of mechanical travel to hit America just after the civil war in 1865, steam trains allowed people to travel long distances and transport goods and services much quicker.
These great locomotives have a simple design that powers them. Coal is burned to create kinetic energy and in turn moves the train forward. Because it is simple and so successful, it is still used today in many model steam trains.
In later years, coal was replaced by electricity which is less expensive and dirty to run. Electric trains are also much faster than the old steam trains so many of them were replaced.
But, model steam trains have become more popular because people of all ages love to see the steam puffs which remind them of the glory days when they ran.
Collectors and enthusiasts can purchase a wide range of different steam train models and miniature steam engine kits which are exact replicas of the very first steam torque engines that ran the tracks in early America. The best place to get them is online or in specialty retail stores across the country. Popular brands are Lionel Norfolk and western model trains. Owning a model steam train should be a goal of every collector in order for them to call their collection complete. They are wonderful reminders of history and how this country was built. Steam locomotives were the very backbone of railroading up until the 1950’s. Combining them together with model train scenery will make a fabulous set to display and play with.
The traditional steam trains will usually be black or green and should include a chimney, boiler, firebox, cab, wheels and rods connecting these together. Model steam locomotives are usually categorized by their wheel configuration (e.g. 2-6-6-6) in addition to the railroad name.
I’ll never forget my first train set. We actually had a race car set that had a train going around the car tracks. It was so much fun because you had to get your cars around and through the model train tracks before the train came. Even though it was a simple set, it was so much fun to run. We would set ours up every Christmas and play for hours. Now if I had to do it all over again, I would definitely do more with the model train layouts and scenic landscapes. What fun it is to collect model steam trains!
